Guadeloupe man said to have planned attack in Australia
Saturday, November 22, 2003
PARIS, France (AFP): A suspected radical Islamist has told French police another suspected extremist, Guadeloupe-born Willie Brigitte, had been planning an attack in Australia before he was expelled from the country, judicial officials said on Friday.
Frenchman Ibrahim Keita, 37, told investigators Brigitte had told him of a plan to carry out an attack in Australia, where he lived for five months before his expulsion in October, one official said.
Keita, who like Brigitte is being investigated by French police, had not mentioned a possible target or timeframe, the official added.
Brigitte, 35, is reported to have made the remarks during a telephone conversation while he was in Australia.
Brigitte and Keita were part of a group that participated in survival training in France which investigators say took place between 1998 and 2001.
The training was to prepare some of the group for military training in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
