Antigua opposition leader asks
Governor General to intervene in property controversy
Thursday, November 20, 2003
ST JOHN'S, Antigua: In a letter Wednesday to Sir James Carlisle, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, opposition leader Mr Baldwin Spencer called upon Sir James to intervene in what he describes as a transfer of state-owned real estate to the Bank of Antigua in exchange for real estate valued at a substantially lower sum.
Mr Spencer referred to what he called a "public outrage" over allegations that two ministers who negotiated the property transfer on behalf of the government are the beneficiaries of substantial sums of money from the principal of the Bank of Antigua.
In his letter, a copy of which was made available to Caribbean Net News, Mr Spencer appealed to the Governor General to exercise the authority vested in him by the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda and call on the Prime Minister for a full report on the matter.
