British police to probe 20-year-old murder in Guyana
Tuesday, November 18, 2003
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: A small team of British police is due to arrive in Guyana to help investigate a killing that occurred more than two decades ago.
The arrest of a British police officer of Guyanese nationality last week in relation to a shooting alleged to have occurred 21 years ago in Guyana caught the authorities in Guyana by surprise.
Local police have had trouble finding records of the killing, but plan to contact
the victim’s sister who still lives in the country, said Guyana’s Assistant Police Commissioner Leon Trim.
The arrest was made in Britain following a worldwide investigation by Interpol, Suffolk police and other agencies into the death of Brian Spencer.
Mr Spencer, who was believed to be a Guyanese national, died in Guyana from injuries sustained after being shot in 1982.
An informant alerted British authorities to details surrounding the killing, which happened in the village of Kuru
Kuru, 22 miles south of the capital, Georgetown.
It has not been made public whether the unnamed officer was a policeman at the time of Mr Spencer's
death.
