Online lottery for Montserrat

Saturday, November 15, 2003

BRADES, Montserrat: The Montserrat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) plans to launch an online lottery on December 9 and has engaged an American lottery group to operate, develop and promote the lottery, according to a report aired on Radio Montserrat.

Last Friday was the deadline for Montserratians to buy shares in Montserrat Lotteries Ltd - a subsidiary of the MCCI. Kenny Cassell, Chairman of the MCCI, says one thousand shares were being sold at US$350 each until November 14, 2003.

From then on, Montserratians will have to pay an extra US$100 to buy into the company.

According to Cassell, Montserratians are being given first preference to prevent wealthy investors from taking over the operation.

He said the Internet lottery will have a wide market and will bring in millions of dollars for the island.

In July, the government signed an agreement to launch the lottery, which is being operated by Internet Accessible Lotteries Ltd - based in Florida.

Michael Smith, a Florida-based businessman, is the major player behind the Internet lottery enterprise.
