Celebrity Cruises announces 'Savor the Caribbean' sailings

Friday, November 14, 2003

MIAMI, USA: Seven nights of epicurean delights await guests on select Celebrity Cruises itineraries beginning in February when, in partnership with Bon Appetit, America's foremost food and entertaining magazine, Celebrity will present eight "Savor the Caribbean" cruises.

Each cruise offers travelers the opportunity to learn more about the region's unique style of cooking, and meet the chefs that give the Caribbean its culinary charisma.

Highlighting the "savory" series from February 7 through March 27, 2004, is an array of notable chefs who will offer complimentary demonstrations and tastings onboard. The celebrated chefs include:

  • Michelle Bernstein, whose "Azul" restaurant in Miami's chic Mandarin Oriental hotel continues to receive top ratings, as does Bernstein herself.

  • Carmen Gonzalez, who opened the highly acclaimed "Clowns" in Coral Gables, Fla., and now operates the appropriately named "Carmen the Restaurant" in that same community.

  • Robbin Haas, who has been involved with an impressive list of venues, including Miami area hotspots "China Grill Cafe," "Red Square," "Baleen" and "Chispa."

  • Jessica Harris, author of Sky Juice & Flying Fish: Traditional Caribbean Cooking, who is considered among the world's most articulate speakers on Caribbean cuisine.

  • Mark Militello, who oversees a quartet of superb South Florida restaurants bearing his name: "Mark's Las Olas," "Mark's Mizner Park," "Mark's South Beach" and "Mark's CityPlace."

  • Oliver Saucy, who has received extensive recognition for quality and innovation in the kitchen, as well as for his restaurant, Darrel & Oliver's Cafe Maxx in Pompano Beach, Fla.

  • Norma Shirley, who has been called "the Julia Child of the Caribbean," and is operator of the popular "Norma's" restaurants in Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica, as well as in Miami.

  • Allen Susser, whose "Chef Allen's" in Aventura, Fla., has been called "the best restaurant south of New York City," while Susser himself has been called the "Ponce de Leon" of Florida cuisine.

Every Savor the Caribbean cruise will include a Bacardi sailaway party; daily culinary activities; a demonstration by the featured chef during the day at sea; a Caribbean-themed deck party, and private rum tastings and suggested wine pairings led by noted spirits authorities.

In addition, via partnering with culinary experts at Bon Appetit, Celebrity has created shore excursions exclusive to the Savor the Caribbean series, which guests may purchase online, in advance of their cruise.

Among the highlights of the one-of-a-kind excursions are a private cooking class in the Dominican Republic; a tour of the Mount Gay Rum Factory and tea at Sunbury Plantation in Barbados; a private lunch in the gardens of Blackbeard's Castle; a private visit to Antigua's Harmony Hall Inn with its owners; and a class focused on exotic island spices at the hot, new "Rhodes Restaurant" in Grenada's Calabash Hotel.

The platform for the "Savor the Caribbean" series is the newest ship in the Celebrity fleet, Constellation, departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico on Saturdays, with calls on Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic; Bridgetown, Barbados; St. George's, Grenada; St. John's, Antigua; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.
