BASSETERRE, St. Kitts: St. Kitts and Nevis and Japan pledged to strengthen the already existing good relationship between both countries.
St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas in welcoming Japan's newly-accredited Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr Shigenobu Kato said the twin-island Federation has received assistance from his country in several areas including fisheries, education, tourism and technology.
Dr. Douglas made specific reference to Japan's financing of the multi-million dollar Basseterre Fisheries Complex.
"The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the people generally and the fishermen specifically, are grateful. We believe that there are other areas that can be explored in maintaining our good relationship in the future," said Prime Minister Douglas.
He hoped that Ambassador Kato's diplomatic tenure in the Caribbean would "ensure that such explorations are made and where we would be able to consolidate our efforts in areas that we have already achieved and to break new horizons in the developing relationship between St. Kitts and Nevis."
Ambassador Kato said Japan welcomes the leadership role of Prime Minister Douglas not only in the region but also internationally and pledged to work with the St. Kitts and Nevis leader to advance a peaceful global society.
"We do always appreciate your support for Japan in the various fora and for ensuring stability and prosperity for the world, the region and the people of St. Kitts and Nevis," said Ambassador Kato, who is based in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
While here the Japanese diplomat, who was accompanied by his wife and another official presented his Letters of Credence to Governor General, Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Timothy Harris.
