BASSETERRE, St Kitts: Nevis, "Queen of the Caribe" has been dubbed one of five "dream destinations in the sun."

Travel writer Tom Wuckovich in a special feature in Canada's Toronto Star newspaper describes 'Nevis and its larger "sister" island of St. Kitts as perfect examples of the "true" Caribbean character - unhurried, quaint, friendly, beautiful, lush and uncomplicated.'

"Created by volcanic activity, Nevis is a mere 93 sq. km [36 sq. miles] in area and is dominated by Nevis Peak, a mountain whose 975-metre [3,200 ft] crown is almost always shrouded by clouds," wrote Wuckovich.

He said the range is surrounded by dense rainforests flush with monkeys, tropical birds and colourful flora. "The stunning scenery is complemented by the crystalline sea that hugs its rugged coastline. The waters are a snorkeling and diving heaven, dotted with reefs, shipwrecks and underwater nurseries that harbour fish and molluscs of every size and description," wrote Wuckovich.

He said the capital of Charlestown is small, with charming buildings that enhance its 18th-century flavour. "There are other historic structures: weathered sugar factories and windmills; the remains of forts and beautifully restored plantation inns," said Wickovich.

Other dream destinations are St. Lucia, Curacao, Palm Island in the Grenadines and Mustique.
