DR player disqualified from volleyball World Cup after failed dope test

Monday, November 10, 2003

SAPPORO, Japan, (AFP): A player from the Dominican Republic was kicked out of the World Cup women's volleyball tournament after testing positive for a banned medicine, it was announced Sunday.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) said Nurys Arias Done tested positive after her samples on Monday and Wednesday showed the presence of banned drug methandienone.

The FIVB officials summoned Done for a hearing Saturday and she was excluded from the remaining matches of the tournament. The FIVB said it would suspend her for two years with immediate effect.

"The FIVB is engaged in a firm and permanent battle against doping in sport and in this fight we are drawing a player from each team in almost all of the matches in the World Cup," FIVB president Ruben Acosta said.

The FIVB said it was the first time in volleyball history that a player has tested positive for using methandienone.

The Dominican Republic National Volleyball Federation said Sunday that Done "admitted taking the medication Gelnorex Vita without knowing that it contained substances banned by sport."

Gelnorex Vita contains ciproheptadine and also vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12 and nicotinamide, according to the Federation.

The Dominican Federation said it believed that Done only and exclusively took the medication to improve her appetite and never had any intention of obtaining sports, competitive and athletic advantages.
