Bahamas blackout
Saturday, November 8, 2003
NASSAU, Bahamas: A blackout caused by a faulty cable between two power stations left thousands of Bahamians without electricity on the country's most populous island of New Providence.
Most schools and many businesses were closed in the capital of Nassau. Major resorts and hotels on adjacent Paradise Island largely had backup generators, however, allowing them to continue operating.
The power cut began before dawn Thursday and power gradually returned to many locations during the day, Bahamas Electricity Corporation General Manager Bradley Roberts said.
Officials had yet to determine what caused the problem with the cable between two power stations.
