SENDAI, Japan, (AFP): Four-time defending champions Cuba bounced back from three set-points down in each of the last two sets to beat European champions Poland in the World Cup women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday.
The Cuban women were 22-24 down in the second set when Martha Sanchez led her side with her excellent defense to regain the momentum before scoring a 25-19, 27-25, 27-25 victory.
It was Cuba's second win after losing to Asian champions China and European silver medallists Turkey in the 12-team round robin, a qualifying event for the Athens Olympic Games next year.
"Poland are a strong team, but we never lost our concentration throughout the match today. We kept it right after the start to the end. It allowed us to win the match," said woman-of-the-match Fernandez Zolia
Barros.
