Wednesday, November 5, 2003
KINGSTON, Jamaica: A member of the U.S. Embassy staff in Kingston was in serious, but stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest late Sunday evening.
The employee, whom the embassy declined to identify for "privacy and security reasons", was shot in the chest about 11:15 pm Sunday, according to embassy spokesperson Orna Blum.
The person received "excellent medical treatment here" and was evacuated yesterday to the United States for additional care, which is "standard operating procedure", added Blum.
US officials were "working closely" with the police to investigate the crime, an embassy statement said.
