Montserrat Police Commissioner agrees to extend contract
Tuesday, November 4, 2003
BRADES, Montserrat: Mr John Douglas, Montserrat's Commissioner of Police, has agreed to extend his contract for a further year. Governor Anthony J. Longrigg said Mr Douglas' current contract runs out in March 2004 just a few weeks before a new Governor takes office.
"Mr Douglas has been doing an excellent job and it would be extremely difficult for a new Governor and a new Commissioner of Police to ensure continuity within the RMPF when both are starting together," said Governor Longrigg.
He says it will be far better for the new Governor to be able to benefit from an experienced Commissioner's advice and then participate in choosing a successor.
Governor Longrigg says this will be a key area of the new Governor's responsibilities.
Commissioner Douglas has agreed to extend his contract until March 2005 at which time he will retire from the Force.
Mr Longrigg is retiring from the British Diplomatic Service and will be succeeded by Ms Deborah Barnes-Jones, who will reportedly be the first woman Governor of a UK Overseas Territory.
Mrs Barnes-Jones, currently the UK Ambassador to Tbilisi ( Georgia), previously worked in Montevideo and Tel Aviv as well as several postings in London at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
She is a graduate of Bristol University and the mother of twin daughters aged 12.
