Sir Ronald Sanders

Saturday, October 25, 2003

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: Sir Ronald Sanders, chief foreign affairs representative of Antigua and Barbuda, has been elected chairman of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, a 30-member group of Central and South American and Caribbean nations devoted to combating money laundering and terrorism financing.

The meeting of the task force began in Antigua on Monday, October 20, and concluded today under his chairmanship.

"It is in the interest of the world's industrialized nations to help the countries of the Caribbean basin combat the scourges of money laundering and terrorism financing," Sir Ronald told representatives from the 30 member countries as well as delegates from the United States, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Canada and Spain. "These issues know no language and respect no borders. Therefore, it is incumbent on every region of the world to cooperate in fighting them."

According to Sir Ronald, the organization set an ambitious program for itself over the next year to organize meetings of the leadership of all regional bodies throughout the world concerned with fighting financial crime. Included in such meetings would be the Financial Action Task Force, a Paris- based body appointed by the G7 countries.
