Dominica's Elizabeth 'Pampo' Israel laid to rest

ROSEAU, Dominica: The person widely believed to have been the world's oldest person, Elizabeth 'Pampo' Israel, was be laid to rest yesterday. Born in the Commonwealth of Dominica in 1875, her life spanned three centuries. Mrs Elizabeth Israel was given an Official Funeral and the Dominican Flag was flown at half-mast on all public buildings in the State. A National Day of Mourning had been declared.
The late Elizabeth 'Pampo ' Israel attracted positive international attention to Dominica as a result of her longevity and was recognized by numerous regional and international magazines at the age of 128, as the world's oldest living person. Elizabeth 'Pampo 'Israel was the recipient of Dominica's highest award, The Dominica Award of Honour at the 2002 Independence Celebrations.
Official Mourners at the funeral service included the President and Mrs. Liverpool, the Prime Minister and Members of Cabinet, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Leader of the Opposition, Members of the House of Assembly, The Secretary to the Cabinet, Chairmen of the Constitutional Commissions and Heads of Departments of Government.
