Britain's Prince Philip addresses AIDS/HIV forum
Sunday, October 19, 2003
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Britain's Prince Philip, on an official visit to Barbados, has stressed that his organization, the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards International Association, is more concerned with promoting prevention of HIV/AIDS than a cure.
He told a forum in Barbados yesterday, "The awards scheme is not trying to solve problems in health. What it's trying to do is to prevent problems in health."
About 250 delegates from 59 countries attended the association's conference at the Almond Beach resort in the northern part of
Barbados.
"What we need to see is that the awards scheme is very firmly in the camp of prevention. There are other organizations that are trying to cure," said the Prince.
The Caribbean has the second-highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world behind sub-Saharan Africa.
Prince Philip arrived in Friday night to join his son Prince Edward who is on the second stop of a Caribbean tour.
Prince Edward who is the chairman of his father's association, will travel to Guyana on Monday for two days. He will then go to the British territory of Bermuda to assess damage caused by Hurricane Fabian last month.
