Thursday, October 16, 2003
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica: Three Jamaicans are dead and three others wounded following a five-hour shootout between police and gunmen yesterday.
The violence, according to the Associated Press, began early yesterday when police raided the Canterbury neighborhood of Montego Bay to seize illegal guns and quell a recent upsurge in violence.
Several men armed with AK-47s then opened fire on the officers, injuring three and pinning down 10 more in a gun battle that lasted more than five hours.
With military helicopters swirling above, some 150 heavily armed police and soldiers swept in, killing three of the gunmen and freeing several trapped officers who came under fire. Four suspected gunmen were reportedly detained.
