Haitians continue to protest against government
Wednesday, October 15, 2003
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti: Opposition continues to mount against the Jean Bertrand Aristide government, as for a second day this week, protesters hurled rocks at police and blocked streets with flaming tire barricades, demanding the President 's resignation.
Radio reports indicate that police fired into the air to break up the demonstration in St. Marc, where about 1,000 protesters took to the streets. No one was, however, injured, AP reported.
Schools and businesses remained closed for a second day in St. Marc, 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of the capital. Drum-beating protesters reportedly marched through the town shouting "Down with Aristide" and "We won't celebrate 2004 with Aristide," referring to the country's 200th anniversary of independence.
