Dominican Republic to host track and field competition
Wednesday, October 15, 2003
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic: Officials in the Dominican Republic are gearing up to host more than 50 athletes from around the world in a one-day track and field competition slated for next year.
The Grand Prix, set for 1, May, 2004, will reportedly include the 100-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, 1,500 meters, long jump and shot put, AP last night quoted secretary general, Mr. Domingo Cuevas, of the Dominican Track & Field Federation, as saying.
The event, backed by the International Association of Athletics Federations, would pay some US$170,000 in prize money.
The Grand Prix comes after the country hosted the Pan American Games in August, spending about US$70 million to build new stadiums and other facilities.
