St. Kitts to use new weapons to fight drug trafficking

Monday, October 13, 2003

BASSETTERE, St. Kitts: Law enforcement in St. Kitts and Nevis have a new weapon in their arsenal to fight drug trafficking and criminality. Two canine dogs have now joined the Drug Unit of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mr. Joseph Edmeade, said the first phase of the programme is costing government some EC$150,000.

"We are hoping that in the upcoming budget we will make an additional allocation so that we can continue to assist the police in fighting crime," St. Kitts information service quoted Mr. Edmeade as saying, following a demonstration on the grounds of the St. Kitts Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC).

He said government was ensuring that the police have the facilities to do their work and the country expects them to do their work as effective as they possible can.

"This is a clear demonstration of the seriousness of this St. Kitts-Nevis government in tackling crime, especially when it comes to the question of drug interdiction," said Mr. Edmeade.

He said the dogs will be used at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and the seaport by the Drug Unit in the interdiction of drug trafficking and the Special Services Unit in apprehending those who would want to perpetrate criminal activity in this country.

Mr. Edmeade said the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Administration is serious "and with what I have seen here today, I am sure that the police are going to use them effectively in their work and I sound a warning that we are serious."
