Mindy loses strength to become tropical depression
Monday, October 13, 2003
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico: Tropical Storm Mindy lost strength as it churned into the Atlantic yesterday and by last night was downgraded to a less-dangerous tropical depression.
But forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami warned
Bermudan officials to monitor the development of the storm, which was expected to pass just south of the mid-Atlantic British territory this week if it does not dissipate first.
According to AP, reconnaissance planes on Sunday afternoon determined Mindy's maximum sustained winds had weakened to 35 mph, bringing it down from a tropical storm designation given to storms with sustained winds of 39 mph.
Forecasters also predicted that Tropical Depression Mindy's strength would remain unchanged today as it moved northeast into the Atlantic.
Last night, Mindy was located at latitude 25.8 north, longitude 71.9 west, or about 630 miles southwest of Bermuda, and was moving north-northeast at 9 mph.
Mindy is the 13th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began 1st June and ends 30th November.
