First IVF baby born in Barbados
Saturday, October 11, 2003
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: The first baby, conceived by in-vitro fertilization (IVF), has been born in Barbados. The baby boy, who was conceived at the end of January, was delivered by elective caesarian at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, morning.
The Barbados Nation, quoted the head of the Simms International Fertility Clinic, Dr Juliet Skinner, as saying, the seven-pound, four-ounce bundle of joy was in fine health and the parents are obviously excited by this historic birth.
Although the name of the baby is being withheld and the identity of the parents kept secret, an air of excitement hung over the Bayview Hospital where the baby was delivered, the Nation said.
Dr. Skinner, who is also an obstetrician and gynaecologist, said not only was this their first IVF birth, but it was great that the original team of embryologist, Dr Liz Butler and fertility nurse, Anna Hosford from Sims Fertility, Dublin, were able to be a part of it.
