Haitians are repatriated every month from Dominican Republic

Friday, October 10, 2003

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic: Haitian migrants seeking a better life in the Dominican Republic are being repatriated in the droves each month.

The Associated Press last night reported that as many as four thousand illegal Haitian migrants are repatriated each month. But many migrants often sneak back over the border days after they have been repatriated, officials told AP.

The two countries share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Between 600,000 and 1 million Haitians live in the Dominican Republic, most illegally, officials told AP.

Haiti, with 8 million residents, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

In recent weeks, protests have dominated the island as opposition grows to the President Jean Bertrand Aristide's government.
