Bad weather forces Red Stripe matches to be abandoned

Friday, October 10, 2003

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: Not a ball was played in Antigua yesterday in the Zone B Red Stripe match-up between hosts Antigua & Barbuda and the University of the West Indies at the Antigua Recreation Ground, CMC reports indicate.

And while play got underway in Jamaica, the weather intervened there too, forcing umpires to call off the match between Trinidad & Tobago and the Windward Islands.

T&T players, Mervyn Dillon and Fernix Thomas, were struck by lighting and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital. T&T had already reached 198 for seven off 50 overs in their Zone A match in Jamaica but lighting followed by a heavy lunchtime shower and persistent afternoon rain did not allow the Windwards the opportunity to reply.

Trinidad & Tobago, on 10 points, and unbeaten Jamaica, on 12 points, have effectively qualified for the semi-finals. The two face each other in Sunday's final Zone-A match at Sabina Park. Guyana face Leewards in Antigua in the Zone B semi-final action.

Today is a rest day but play resumes tomorrow with Canada taking on the Rest of the Leewards in Jamaica and Barbados playing the Young West Indies in Antigua.
