Haiti perceived to be one of the most corrupt nations

Thursday, October 9, 2003

BERLIN, Germany: The Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2003, which charts levels of corruption in 133 countries, shows Haiti at number 131, just above Nigeria, with Bangladesh in last place.

The TI Corruption Perceptions Index this year ranks 133 countries in terms of the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among public officials and politicians. It is a composite index, drawing on 17 different polls and surveys from 13 independent institutions carried out among business people and country analysts, including surveys of residents, both local and expatriate.

In 2002, the Index included only 102 countries. The large increase in coverage relates to the fact that more valid and reputable sources have been found that can be incorporated.

Other regional inclusions in the Index are Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago tied at number 43; Belize at number 46; Jamaica at number 57; and the Dominican Republic at number 70.

Transparency International, founded in 1993, is the leading international non-governmental organisation devoted solely to curbing corruption. TI currently has close to 90 national chapters around the world and its International Secretariat is in Berlin, Germany.
