Former BVI official pleads not guilty to theft
Wednesday, October 8, 2003
ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands: A former BVI financial secretary who allegedly stole government funds meant for installing telecommunications equipment in public offices, told a court yesterday that he is innocent.
AP last night reported that Mr. L. Allen Wheatley, 34, who stepped down in 2002 as a result of the case, also faces separate corruption charges related to a new hospital's construction in the British territory's capital, Road Town, and is appealing his conviction in a third corruption case. He is accused of stealing $858,000 and conspiring to steal $430,000 more through government contracts, and neglecting his public duty to advise government of contract costs and details.
Tuesday's court appearance marked the start of the largest case against Mr. Wheatley, who faces up to 10 years prison if convicted.
A trial date was set for 3rd November.
