Barbados lifts IT taxes

Wednesday, October 8, 2003

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: All taxes on computer hardware and software have been lifted in Barbados. The Barbados Advocate quoted Senator Phillip Goddard, a special envoy of the prime minister, as saying the move is only one of many initiatives the government is using to attract investments in the IT sector.

The government is also working on legislation to protect privacy online, guard against computer crimes, and facilitate scientific research, education and e-government, the paper also quoted Mr. Goddard as saying.

He stressed the importance of encouraging growth in the IT sector not just in his country but in the small nations in the Caribbean and elsewhere in order to keep pace with the "massive change" taking place in the way business is done globally.

However, Mr. Goddard warned that more must be done, for instance by the World Summit on the Information Society to assist small island states to develop their IT capabilities.
