Schools, businesses close in Haiti as protests continue

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti: Schools and businesses remained closed in Haiti yesterday while public transportation was reduced by half and vendors shied away from open markets as protests continued in the country's capital.

Protestors are calling for President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to resign, AP reported last night. 

"The American people forced President Nixon to resign," AP quoted coalition leader, Mr. Jean-Robert Lalane, as saying, referring to protests leading to the U.S. president's resignation in August 1974. "We have the same right to force Aristide, who is a budding dictator, to resign."

The group is planning to hold more protests today and in the coming days, Mr. Lalane added.
