Tuesday, October 7, 2003
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Two-time stroke survivor and founder of the GIS Caribbean OnLine Data Transfer Service, Mr. Norman 'Gus' Thomas, is urging Caricom to honor the region's
renowned gospel singer, Mr. Joseph Niles.
Mr. Thomas, who also serves as the press attaché to Prime Minister Lester Bird of Antigua and Barbuda recently wrote Caricom Secretary General, Mr. Edwin Carington, urging that the Barbadian-born Mr. Niles be honored for his contribution to gospel music in the region.
Mr. Thomas said "…long before there was a Jessie Dixon, Kirk Franklin, a Tramaine Hawking, Albert Lewis, Benny Hinn, Mr. Hage, the Gospel Gems and the Grace Thrillers, there was Joseph Niles."
"It is time therefore, that CARICOM honour this giant of a regional 'Minister of Music' who has crossed all national boundaries, entered all ports of entry as he blessed the hearts of millions with his soul-stirring singing over the years," he stated. "Let us not wait until "Brother Joe" has passed-on to start pontificating."
