Jamaica's Figueroa hailed as 'international leader'

Washington D. C.: Dr. Peter Figueroa, senior medical ffficer in charge of Jamaica's Ministry of Health's Epidemiology and HIV/AIDS Programme, has been named as one of six awardees by the JHIPIEGO Corporation, a subsidiary of the John Hopkins University Health System.
Dr. Figueroa was presented with one of the corporation's Leadership in Health Awards, at a recent function at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., JIS News recently reported.
Dr. Figueroa, who also heads Jamaica's Health Ministry's efforts to counter sexually transmitted diseases, was specifically recognised for his work in HIV/AIDS care, practice, and treatment.
The Jamaican physician was lauded for his commitment to making HIV/AIDS care and treatment more available in the public sector, while also developing effective approaches, which have successfully aided government's HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives.
The other five awardees included healthcare professionals from Egypt, Thailand, Guatemala, Indonesia and Afghanistan, with the recipient from Egypt being Ms. Suzanne Mubarak, wife of Egyptian President, Mr. Hosni
Mubarak.
