Bermuda's Causeway may open next week
Sunday, October 5, 2003
HAMILTON, Bermuda: More than a month after Hurricane Fabian wrecked Bermuda's Causeway, killing four people, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Engineering, Mr. Derrick Binns, has announced the East End link to the mainland may open as early as next week.
The Royal Gazette quoted Mr. Binns as saying that repair and restoration work on the Causeway was almost completed and the bridge could be open to two-lane traffic within a matter of days.
"It's possible it will be ready for Monday or Tuesday …, but, hopefully, it will definitely be one day (this) week," the minister said.
However, he said some building may continue for a week or so after. "Once it's open, there may still be some work going on," he added. "There may be work to finish on the walls and there might be some traffic control for short periods, such as traffic lights and Stop Go signs, while it is completed. The bridge was largely washed away during Hurricane Fabian on 5th September.
