Trinidad
Saturday, October 4, 2003
Port of Spain, Trinidad: Come Monday, 6th October, representatives from various Caribbean countries will meet in Trinidad to assess their performance in implementing the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.
Conference participants will review the implementation experience and identify strategies for strengthening the sustainable development process, a statement issued by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said.
The SIDS POA, adopted by the United Nations Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (UNGCSIDS) in 1994, identifies specific policies to be implemented as well as actions to be taken to ensure the success and sustainability of development approaches.
The Programme of Action builds on the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development and Agenda 21, which emerged from the 1992 United Nations' Conference on Environment and Development.
Among the 15 subject areas that constitute the SIDS POA, Caribbean countries have identified coastal and marine resources, natural and environmental disasters, land resources and management of wastes as priorities.
