U.S. Virgin Islands teachers slam governor
Friday, October 3, 2003
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S.V.I: Teachers in the U.S. Virgin Islands have accused Governor Charles Turnbull of incompetence and launched an effort to recall him. They claim that the U.S. territory's high schools are losing federal accreditation because of Governor Turnbull.
The American Federation of Teachers filed a petition requesting the recall election. The union has until 15th November to submit more than 17,000 signatures of support. It would then be up to the territory's Senate to decide on a recall.
Mr. Turnbull's spokesman, James O'Bryan Jr., declined to comment to the Associated Press. The governor, with less than a year into his second term, campaigned heavily on a platform to improve education.
