Hurricane Kate not yet a threat to Bermuda

Thursday, October 2, 2003

MIAMI, Florida: Hurricane Kate is currently about 1,295 miles east of Bermuda and, at 11 p.m. last night, forecasters at the National Weather Service said the center was moving toward the west-southwest near 14 mph.  A turn to the west is expected today.

Maximum sustained winds were near 75 mph last night with higher gusts expected today.

No advisories have been issued by the Bermuda government and meteorologists are monitoring Kate's movement. But many remain optimistic that Kate will cause no harm

"Even within the next five days it will still be east of Bermuda," AP quoted Ms. Krissy Williams, a meteorologist at the center as saying. "It's basically out in the central Atlantic not bothering anybody."

Kate is the sixth hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began 1st June and runs through 30th November.
