CASTRIES, St. Lucia: Former Foreign Minister of the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia, Mr. George Odlum, is dead.

The leftist minister died yesterday after a prolonged bout with pancreatic cancer, the Associated Press reported. He was 65.

Mr. Odlum became foreign minister for the ruling St. Lucia Labor Party after a stormy career. He resigned in 2000 in a dispute over the government's direction, and unsuccessfully sought to regain power in an alliance with a rival party in 2001. Mr. Odlum also came under heavy criticism for his close ties to the Libyan regime of Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi.

Born on 24th June 1934, Mr. Odlum studied at Oxford and Bristol Universities in England.

Friend and former colleague, Mr. Romanus Lansiquot, had come to his aid last year, to help pay mounting medical bills. Mr. Lansiquot had embarked on a bunch of philanthropic efforts to aid the former minister.
