Caricom officials for free trade discussion in Miami

Friday, September 19, 2003

MIAMI, Florida: Caricom officials will be in Miami tomorrow, Saturday, 21st September, for a seminar aimed at increasing awareness of the benefits and challenges of the Free Trade Area of the Americas.

The Sun Sentinel reported that Caricom officials will join members of the Greater Caribbean-American Chamber of Commerce to discuss the U.S.-backed initiative, aimed at creating the world's largest free trade zone among 34 democracies in the Western Hemisphere.

The event, which is reportedly organized by Caricom consuls-general in Miami and Caricom ambassadors in Washington, will feature a panel of government and regional officials and business executives including the trade ministers of Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados at the University of Miami's James Knight Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"Our focus is to educate the Caribbean community in South Florida about the FTAA," the Sentinel quoted Ms. Joyce Bourne, vice consul of Barbados in Miami, as saying. "We want to give people information on the FTAA and encourage them to prepare themselves."

While Caribbean nations are interested in the benefits of free trade, they are also concerned about the impact of globalization.
