
Foreign nationals may pay for permits in Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica: Foreign nationals seeking work permits in Jamaica may soon have to shell out the big bucks. The Jamaica Gleaner reported today that the Minister of Labour is looking at charging whopping fees for the issuing of work permits, which are currently free.
According to the Gleaner, fees were charged up to the 1970s but the law was then withdrawn under a reciprocal agreement with the United States Government, which allowed Jamaican farm workers to work there without permits.
That programme has, however, been significantly cut and the US has begun charging Jamaican hospitality workers for work permits.
