Hundreds rage against abortion legalization plan in St. Lucia
Wednesday, September 10, 2003
CASTRIES, St. Lucia: The St. Lucian government wants to legalize abortions on the island but conservatives and Catholics are hopping mad.
Dozens protested silently in Castries yesterday in a protest organized by the island's Roman Catholic Church, the Associated Press reported.
No date has been given as to when government will bring the bill to parliament but hundreds of islanders from various religious denominations circled the building wearing black and carrying an empty coffin covered in a white sheet.
The government, however, says the bill seeks to legalize abortion in cases of rape, incest or possible medical danger to the mother. "The government is not legalizing abortion for any and everybody," Justice Minister Mr. Petrus Compton was quoted as saying, "There should be a limited class of instances in which you permit abortions."
