Sunday, August 31, 2003

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: First it was the Mars mania that grabbed the world. Now a huge, mysterious object, is grabbing the interest of both the Barbadian public and the U.S. military. The weather-beaten, cone-shaped object, which seems to be made of fibre-glass, was found at sea by a fisherman, the Barbados Nation reported. Fisherman Mr. John Armstrong, of Consett Bay, St. John, reportedly found the object while on a fishing expedition five miles off Barbados.

He towed it with his fishing vessel and deposited it on the beach at Consett Bay. Bajan police claim the shell may be part of a missile or a war plane but officials are unsure how got in Barbados. U.S. officials on the island claim they have but said they have sought assistance from Washington to solve the mystery and decipher the faded words, which reads, "United States Navy."
